چکیده

Many present-day galaxies are known to harbor supermassive, ≥ 10 M⊙, black holes. These central black holes must have grown through accretion from less massive seeds in the early universe. The molecules CO and H2 can be used to trace this young population of accreting massive black holes through the Xray irradiation of ambient gas. The X-rays drive a low-metallicity ion-molecule chemistry that leads to the formation and excitation of CO and H2 in 100 < T ≤ 1, 000 K gas. H2 traces very low metallicity gas, ∼ 10 −3 solar or less, while some pollution by metals, ∼ 10 solar or more, must have taken place to form CO. Strong CO J > 15 and H2 S(0) & S(1) emission is found that allows one to constrain ambient conditions. Comparable line strengths cannot be produced by FUV or cosmic ray irradiation. Weak, but perhaps detectable, H+3 (2,2)→(1,1) emission is found and discussed. The models predict that black hole masses larger than 10 M⊙ can be detected with ALMA, over a redshift range of 5-20, provided that the black holes radiate close to Eddington. The prospects of finding the first quasars in the universe

We study the prospects of finding the first quasars in the universe with ALMA and JWST. For this purpose, we derive a model for the high-redshift black hole population based on observed relations between the black hole mass and the host galaxy. We re-address previous constraints from the X-ray background with particular focus on black hole luminosities below the Eddington limit as observed in m...

The Black Hole - Bulge Relationship for QSOs at High Redshift

We examine the black hole mass galaxy bulge relationship in high-redshift QSOs. Black hole masses are derived from the broad emission lines, and the host galaxy stellar velocity dispersion σ∗ is estimated from the widths of the radio CO emission lines. At redshifts z > 3, the CO line widths are narrower than expected for the black hole mass, indicating that these giant black holes reside in und...

Dust and Molecules at High Redshift

In the last years, progress has been very rapid in the domain of molecules at high redshift, and we know in better detail now the molecular content in several systems beyond z = 1 and up to z ∼ 5, either through millimeter and sub-millimeter emission lines, continuum dust emission, or millimeter absorption lines in front of quasars. The first discovery in 1992 by Brown and van den Bout of CO li...

Centimeter searches for molecular line emission from high-redshift galaxies

We consider the capabilities for detecting low order CO emission lines from high-redshift (z) galaxies using the next generation of radio telescopes operating at 22 and 43GHz. Low order CO emission studies provide critical insight into the nature of high redshift galaxies, including: (i) determining molecular gas masses, (ii) study of large scale structure through 3-dimensional redshift surveys...

The H2 density within spiral and irregular galaxies at high redshift: estimating CO detection limits

We have computed a grid of chemical evolution models for a large set of spiral and irregular theoretical galaxies of different total mass. In our models, the gas phase has two components, the diffuse and the molecular one (H2). It is possible, therefore, to follow the time (or redshift) evolution of the expected density of the H2 phase. We will show the predictions of this gas density at hight ...
